Four Biggest Concerns in House Fire:
1.) Heat- can scorch your lungs, an entire room can ignite within 5 minutes
2.) Gas and Smoke- carbon monoxide poisoning can kill you before fire even reaches your room
3.) Vision- its dark and black, cannot see your hand in front of you, unlike bright flashes in movies
4.) Time- you only have 2 minutes
Plan:
1.) Must have an escape route and practice often (close eyes to make more realistic and determine which child/ren each parent will help; may sound cruel but set off alarm at either 10p or 6a when kids are asleep to ensure they gather each other and race to mailbox)
2.) Must crawl, unless too much smoke (then stay in room, shut door, cover door, open window, and stay low)
3.) Smoke detectors in every bedroom and each floor- check batteries monthly and replace when you change your clocks
4.) Shut doors behind you to prevent spread of fire into entire house
5.) Stop by fire station to get the stickers to put on childrens bedroom doors and also request firemen to dress up to show children they look scary, but very kind and helpful
Avoid:
1.) Putting water on fires
2.) Spending longer than 30 seconds trying fire extinguisher… get family out of house
3.) Leaving matches and lighters in reach of children who roll lighters like a vehicle
4.) Looking for valuables. Having only 2 minutes, no item is worth jeopardizing your life!
