Who else is guilty of this? I remember begging my husband to agree to the #1 rated (and typically most expensive)…. well, any and everything baby related. I tried to say it was for the baby’s safety, as I researched that along the way.
Poor 2nd child comes along and attempting to baby proof all those adorable purchases for our first child helped me realize a mattress on the floor is all they really need in their bedroom! Even better is that he didn’t have those additional temptations to get out of bed to play during nap! Nor did he have changing table or bookshelves to climb on. Let’s not forget the hundreds of books they refuse to read, because there is so much more joy in pulling them off the shelves. My favorite is an art table from Grandma, like any 3 year old would choose to display their masterpieces on paper when given free range to walls, bedspreads, etc.
Then, there’s that poor unfortunate 3rd child. I’m going to be completely honest when I share that I sold most of the top dollar purchases from our first child and used the profit to buy used items for a fraction of the price on Facebook Marketplace and garage sales. She’s also our first girl, so spent a large portion of her life playing with trucks, swords, and other amazing boy toys.
All that being said, if you are pregnant and tempted to go above your budget for your child, know that not one of my children can identify which of them was spoiled. Also, I highly recommend having a room set aside with a mattress only for sleep training a toddler. Once they form those healthy sleep habits, you can add items back into their room.
